Well, my friend informed me on Thursday of a con I didn't even know existed and is into its second year. Apparently BronyCAN has been revived as Vanhoover Pony Expo, and it's hosted in January for some reason. I'm not sure how my friend knew about this con as she's not a Pegasister, but the important thing is she told me about it and I went. I couldn't go Friday as I already had something to do, but I made sure to go yesterday and today. I will say, it was a lot smaller and a lot more chill than BronyCAN was. There weren't as many panels, and there weren't as many vendors (not that that stopped me from checking out what wares there were). However, it also kind of reflects not only where the fandom is currently, but where I'm at currently. I still love FiM, but it's not the obsession it once was for me. That said, it's still something I enjoy, and I did like meeting a friend or two from previous cons and making some new ones. I refrained from getting into CCG tournaments, as I would have had to relearn the game and decided to focus on other things. I did spend a lot of time in the board game room though (which this time was the same room as the CCG room). I played quite a few official and fan games, the standouts being MLP Monopoly and Buck Legacy. The con had a few guests. Since I already had Kelly Sheridan sign my ultra rare Starlight Glimmer Chrono Trigger CCG card three (or I guess just under two and a half) years ago, I collected a signature and artwork from Chiara Zanni, who voiced Daring Do. She was really nice. The mascots from BronyCAN returned for this con, and joined this con's mascots, so technically there were four mascots at this con (and I hope they stick around for next year). I have once again over-spent on con merch, most of which I don't need and has just added to my pile of pony stuff in my closet. I did buy a few CCG packs, just because. Apparently Enterplay is winding down with the CCG. On one hand I thought it died ages ago, so it's good to know it's still around. On the other, I got a super rare and an ultra rare, neither of which are foil, because apparently Enterplay wanted to save money. The ultra rare Applejack card I got has a bit of a shiny design in the corner of it. The super rare is indistinguishable from any other card besides the SR in the corner. Apparently future CCG cards will require printing out as they will be distributed digitally. Lame. Oh well, I guess I should be glad they're still around but they don't excite me anymore. I bought a few other miscellaneous things such as a few mini expansions for Twilight Sparkle's Secret Shipfic folder, and an unopened Funko Bon Bon vinyl figure to pair up with my sealed Lyra from some years ago, a nice Celestia poster and a Rarity button, but the thing that excites me most that I bought is a MLP-themed tarot card set (ok, the Bon Bon figure also excites me). It cost me $65CAD, but it's a really well-done set. The art is great, it comes with a free velvet drawstring bag, and it just feels so professionally done. It is actually a functioning set too as it has both the major and minor arcana. Those official Persona arcana cards I have are only of the major arcana, and are the size I imagine clow cards from Cardcaptors being, so they're not ideal for shuffling either. This set is. Well, there is one problem with the tarot set I bought in that it's missing an equivalent to the lowest value of face cards for the four suits of the minor arcana, so it's a 74 card set as opposed to a 78 card set. I looked up the cards online and the art for them seems to indicate that they never did produce an equivalent to the page (medieval servant). The set includes equivalents to everything else though. The major arcana cards are all the same as the official major arcana, except that they depict FiM characters. For the minor arcana, I did some research. The suit of horns is clearly equivalent to the suit of wands (duh). I found out the suit of power is equivalent to the suit of swords, wings is equivalent to cups and hooves is equivalent to coins (with Ace through Ten being represented by horseshoes). Instead of the king of each suit, there's the Emperor of Power and the Empresses of Horns, Wings and Hooves. The Queen of each suit is still called such. There's the Prince of Power and the Princesses of Horns, Wings and Hooves, which I'm assuming are equivalent to the Knight. I decided to treat them as both the Knight and Page and make up a rule of rolling a die, with high rolls indicating a Knight reading, and low rolls indicating a Page reading. I don't actually believe in tarot so I'm perfectly fine with making up nonsense like that. The Ace through Ten of each suit is just like it is in an official deck. So...I had fun. For a surprise pony con, I'm glad I went, and I'm ok with it being low key. Also, although the con was still spread out across two sides of a building that require exiting to outside to enter the other side (which is less fun in the winter when the wind is picking up), at least it was not also spread out across a few different floors of the hotel, and the vendor hall was close to where the main panels were happening this time. It's still in the same building, but I disliked having to move from a main panel to the vendor hall way to the end of the winding corridor in the other building and am glad I don't need to do that anymore. All in all, it was kind of like Christmas...including the financial hit that Christmas entails. Yes, that metaphor works in more than one sense. I'm glad I went though. It's great to hear that BronyCAN has a spiritual successor! Maybe the same will happen with BronyCon, but I think a lot of people believe that BabsCon will serve the same function. I can see a smaller, more relaxed convention as being a positive thing, as they tend to weed out fans who more or less contributed to the bandwagon effect more than anything else. I don't personally own any tarot cards, but their aesthetic always fascinate me. I think they just made a set themed after The Legend of Zelda, and I am equally curious to see what an MLP set looks like. It appears that the option to buy all of Season 9 for $30 has finally arrived on Amazon. I'll wait just a little longer to see if it ends up on Netflix next month before diving in, though (the latest season is normally up by this point in time). Omnibus Vol. 5 just released! I know what I'll be spending my gift card money on next. I hope more and more Brony conventions either carry on or have a spiritual successor rise from the ashes. Even the most chill of cons are fun. Unless G5 strikes gold again, I doubt we will see many conventions with the same number of attendees that the various cons had at their peak, but maybe there are still enough fans around to at least sustain them. If you're curious, a quick Google search suggests that there is more than one MLP tarot deck out there, but here's a link to the Deviant Art for the major arcana of the deck I bought: www.deviantart.com/southparktaoist/art/My-Little-Pony-Major-Aracana-Tarot-Cards-417169696Here's one for the face cards and aces of the minor arcana: www.deviantart.com/southparktaoist/art/My-Little-Pony-Minor-Arcana-Royal-Court-Tarot-Card-519959078There are unfortunately no images for the other numbered cards of the minor arcana, but they all use the respective symbols for their suits. Power has crystals, wings has feathers, horns has...horns, and hooves has horseshoes. Some of them are the colours you see in the Ace, others have different colours. Also, the other cards of the power suit have a dark background, wings have a night sky with clouds behind them, horns have a wall of fire behind them, and hooves have a dry, cracked, ground underneath the horseshoes. The four suits are supposed to represent the four elements of alchemy, so that could be why. Obviously, wings represents air, horns represents fire, hooves appropriately enough represents earth, and I'm assuming that the darkness behind power could be construed as a stand-in for water...just dark water. The suits in this set are also changed from the standard tarot suits. Power is swords, wings is cups, horns is clearly wands, and hooves is coins or pentacles. This particular deck is missing an equivalent to the Page of each suit, but I've decided the Prince/Princess of each suit can stand-in for both the Knight and Page, determined by a die roll. The Queen is still the Queen, but the Emperor/Empress cards are clearly a stand-in for the King. Obviously the reasoning for this is there are more female characters in this series than male characters. Judging by the characters depicted, this set can be traced back to mid-season 4. It features Alicorn Twilight and the dilapidated Castle of the Two Sisters, and all characters featured were around prior to that point in the series. There's no Tirek though, so it's not post-season 4, and there are certainly no characters from after that point. Obviously Starlight would be featured in a set based on later seasons, and characters like Sunburst, Stygian, Star Swirl and the male Pillars/members of the Student Six could easily help fill in some of the cards that would call for a male character. As you can tell with this set, it looks like the creator didn't know what to do with The Emperor, so it features a spoof on some famous painting I'm not really familiar with (is that King David?). To be honest, I'm kind of conflicted by this set that I bought. I'm a Christian, and I've been told that all forms of divination, including tarot, are considered sorcery. Strange things have been happening lately too, since I've started reading the cards. Maybe they're just a coincidence. I've done a reading for myself and it was scarily pertinent to my current circumstances. Six of my friends who were supposed to set me straight at a game night requested readings instead. Now any sin I've committed is not just my own as it's shared by both the reader and listener. I brought this up with another friend at church who didn't make it out to game night, and he responded by requesting a reading, although we have to schedule a time to do it. I thought for sure he would set me straight. Hmmm...odd. To make matters worse, what I did/am doing for myself and all my friends is called a New Year's Spread, which involves separating the major arcana cards, drawing a major arcana card for the theme of the year, shuffling the remainder back in with the minor arcana, and drawing 12 more cards, each representing the theme for a particular month, and I only read the year's theme and month of January in all instances, with a promise that I'll respond to any requests to relay readings for each month as they happen. Oh, I snapped a picture of my personal spread and had everyone else do the same for theirs, so it's saved on their phone and can be referred to throughout the year.

Well hopefully those strange occurrences are just coincidences and not an actual result of what you're doing. I don't see what harm can come from cards (aside from losing in a Shadow Game on Yu-Gi-Oh!), but if you feel like they pose a danger to you, then maybe it's best not to toy with forces that we don't understand.

Well, after much consideration, I don't think I'm in any danger, but I probably shouldn't spend too much time with the cards, if any. I've been told Tarot is considered witchcraft and don't want any part of that. I am, however, committed to relaying the meaning of the cards drawn for all my friends for February through December, and may as well look up my own reading for those months as well. At the very least, it's sure to be an interesting year.

I finally started Season 9 and I'm 6 episodes in. Everyone has been saying how it's a mixed bag, and so far that holds true. Twilight continues to be depressingly relatable in "The Point of No Return." When she was told that Dusty Pages was "forced" to leave when her perfect record was broken, I thought for sure that the entire episode was an anxiety-induced nightmare. But it was a good episode despite its silly moments, and it had a surprisingly eye-opening message at the end.

It's a quintessential Twilight episode that hits all the right notes and has a good message. It's a great throwback to past Twilight episodes while being a great episode in its own right. While season 9 is definitely a mixed bag, it's a massive improvement over mid-season 8. For the most part I think the last season is decent enough. To say that the lack of Rarijack is a crime though is an understatement. Apparently the writers of that season don't like the Rarijack ship. Here's hoping the season 10 comic will remedy that.

I am now 10 episodes in. I feel like the animators have been working hard to give everyone the cutest facial expressions for this last season. Applejack and Fluttershy both have made faces in the last couple of episodes that made me go, "Aww."

It's not perfect, but it's not terrible. To be fair though the only season that really let me down was season 8, and even then it was only parts of season 8, so maybe I'm not the best critic when it comes to rating a season.

I finally got around to finishing the show last night. I thought it capped off the series quite nicely. More importantly, Pinkie married Cheese!! The only nitpick I have is over the fact that they decided to punish Chrysallis, Tirek, and Cosy. I'm not entirely sure why all of the other villains in the show were worthy of redemption, but not them. And as we've seen in Season 2, being turned to stone is not necessarily a permanent form of punishment. Maybe it would have been best to put the statue in a cage and leave it in Tartarus?

I think their lack of redemption is due to all the criticism the series has gotten for how easily and often villains tended to be reformed. Some fans wanted to see at least someone not turn good, so I'm ok with that. You're right that a cage in Tartarus would be a good idea. That's sin counter type stuff. Equestria is probably doomed anyways. If that one comic arc is to believed, there's a good chance Equestria and the human world are set to collide with one another before too long, causing the complete erasure of both worlds and all that is in them. What's the possibility of a few villains escaping from their petrified state? Plus, Discord was in that state for about 1000 years, so I'm sure there's a warranty of at least a few centuries on these things.

So...have you heard about the plans for G5? What are your thoughts? I'm not sure what to think, and am fully expecting it will be #notmyMLP, but I'm at least willing to give it a chance. If I go in with low expectations, I can't be disappointed, but I can be pleasantly surprised if it turns out better than expected.

I feel like G4 was this lightning-in-a-bottle phenomenon that can't and won't be replicated. With the Mane 6 no longer the focus, it's hard to see characters come close to the ones we adored for more than a decade.

Yeah, that more than anything is why I'm not actually expecting to like it as much, even if it does end up being really good (which I'm not holding my breath on). Worst case, I've kind of moved on anyways. I still check out the MLP GNs when they come out, but it just isn't the staple of my life that it once was. If I don't like G5, my world isn't going to crumble. Also, I'll always have FiM and EQG, and I can revisit those at any time. If I enjoy G5, then maybe I'll be pulled back into what has been a crazy rabbit hole, but if not, then that will be further confirmation that I was right to move on.

I confess that I still haven't picked up Vol. 5 of the omnibus. I think I keep waiting for the price to drop to $15, as some previous volumes have been known to do, but it has never gotten that low. Now there is a sixth volume, lol. If I remember, I might check it out the next time I order anything from Amazon.

If nothing else, they offer new stories with the characters, and I think that's great. I've been mostly collecting them through volumes, though I have been thinking of rebuying Legends of Magic in omnibus form. I have both volumes, and a digital copy of the Annual, but the omnibus is the only way to acquire the annual physically, other than having acquired the original issue (which I didn't). Surprisingly, Amazon.ca didn't stock the third volume of the "manga" itself, and has relied on third party sellers to provide it. Apparently an omnibus of all three volumes is on the way. The two I have read are worth the read.

The new movie looks interesting, but I'm still not 100% sure if I'll be totally on board with the new show. The animation looks incredible, but 3D animation tends to be choppier on TV, so I have strong doubts that the TV show will look nearly as good as the movie.
