I think I just need a quiet weekend where I don't have much happening. I need to do the same sometime. My weekends are almost as busy as my workdays; an uneventful weekend would help recharge my battery. Unfortunately, this is not that weekend as I normally do chores near the 1st of every month. Rebirth is nothing short of impressive so far. Very seldom have I played games with such high expectations that end up being shattered anyway because the game is more than I could hope for. As an open-world game, it solves every problem I have with BOTW/TOTK; the world is big, but it's not too big (meaning it's not intimidating). The environments are rich and the terrain is varied, making the world altogether a joy to explore. It's also brimming with different mini games that are as much fun to play as the game itself. There is an addicting in-universe card game that some players seem to prefer over Gwent (I have yet to play The Witcher 3 to offer my own opinion). Fort Condor, which you'll recall is a physical location in the original game, is a tabletop RTS mini game that was introduced in the Yuffie DLC. It's back in Rebirth and is much harder, though I found up a strategy online that seems to work in most matches. The best part is I'm not even that far, as I'm still on Chapter 4 in the Junon region.

I've now beaten Roger Rabbit for the Famicom Disc System (the Japanese original version of what would become Crazy Castle for the NES). I'm just jumping around between shorter, retro games right now, as I have access to a ton of them, and they don't take up too much time. I hope to be able to settle into something more substantial soon.

Gold Saucer is once again almost as much fun as visiting a real amusement park. The fireworks scene was cut short during the dating sequence, which came as a surprise. I wonder if it will pick back up later. The Dyne arc was really emotional. Of course, it was in the original too, but like everything else, the game expanded on it in all the right ways.

Hmmm...I do seem to experience a lot of analysis paralysis, which is unsurprising since I have access to so many games now. I may start playing Illbleed for the Dreamcast. I did start playing the first Breath of Fire, with the intention of marathoning the first four games, since I am able to have them all on one system. Alternatively, I can return to more modern gaming, as I do have the Alan Wake remake in my backlog. I will say that retro has simultaneously become new again for me, and I'm also reminded that many things I've long come to accept as staples of modern gaming, aren't actually the greatest. Case in point, the Alan Wake remake has a 28GB day 1 patch, which has to be nearly 4X the size of the original game, give or take. Perhaps I needed the experience of emulation to both appreciate how far games have come, as well as the pros and cons of the here and now.

I'm on chapter 10 in Rebirth. Cosmo Canyon may very well be the highlight of the whole game, which comes as no surprise given its status as a fan-favorite location from the original. Chapter 9 was Gongaga, which wasn't in the original game but it's where Zack is from (we saw glimpses of it in Crisis Core). It's neat that they chose to add new locations that service the extended canon. The region's music is also one of my favorites so far.

This turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable, if short experience:
It's dumb, but at least for me, it's the right kind of dumb, and it helps that the game knows its dumb, and so do the VAs who I think strike the right balance of playing it straight and hamming up their performance. It's definitely not meant to be taken seriously, but sometimes that's just what I need.

Just started chapter 10 in Rebirth and am about to visit Nibelheim. Each region in the game features chocobos that have unique traversal abilities, and the ones in the Nibelheim region are strange; they can launch high into the air using some sort of built-in water jet...? It's fun but biologically it surpasses my suspension of disbelief a little bit.

Awesome! I made some more progress in Breath of Fire. I got my third character, and apparently need to backtrack to a town near a previously visited area. I'm sure this series is great, but this first game certainly has all the hallmarks of a SNES RPG, for better or worse. It's no Chrono Trigger, in any case. I'm engaged enough to keep playing though, so I suppose that counts for something.
