The long-running sitcom ended its legendary run on March 31st, 2014. After 9 years, we've gotten to know how Ted Mosby met the mother of his two children while being treated to countless laughs and inside jokes along the way (blue french horn, the pineapple, Robin Sparkles, the slap bet, son-of-a-beech). Like any series finale, How I Met Your Mother was no exception to having created a divide among its fan base in regards to how satisfying the ending was. What were you thoughts? Was it a worthy cap to the show, or did it leave you feeling betrayed?

Sounds like the DVD release of Season 9 will include an alternate ending to the finale.

I liked it. Yeah, it wasn't the cookie cutter, feel-good ending that everyone wanted, but it fits given what the series has been over the years. HIMYM occasionally let us know that it was very much grounded in reality, and went some places big sitcoms don't normally go (Ted getting left at the altar, Marshall's dad dying, Lilly and Marshall breaking up). As for Ted "ending up" with Robin, the biggest complaint I hear about this is that the mother was basically a stepping stone, which couldn't be farther from the case. Robin was never Ted's ultimate goal once Tracy was in the picture. Yeah their on-screen time together was fleeting, but I felt that Ted's monologue at the end summed up his feelings for Tracy very well. And SIX YEARS after her death, Ted can finally move on to a Robin who is finally ready to settle down as well.
Easily the best scene, though- Barney with the baby. So damn powerful.

I couldn't agree more. A lot of people were roped into believing that the show was a fairy tale with an inevitably "preferable" fairy tale ending, but it wasn't. And the examples you listed are perfect examples of that. I never thought for a second that Tracy was a stepping stone to Robin. Before the wedding, he told her up front that he didn't feel that way about her anymore and he meant it. And the fact that 6 years passed before he decided to go back to Robin shows that he really had let her go for a while; they only got together in the end because they were both single for a long time and there was enough of a spark between them that they could be happy together. A lot of people also complained about Robin's hair in 2030. I wonder if the show's creators have a premonition of future fashion trends. >.>
