I watched "Non-Compete Clause". Whoo-boy, you weren't kidding. AJ and Rainbow Dash were not recognizable as characters. I can somewhat see Rainbow Dash care about winning teacher of the month, but AJ is a pragmatist; she wouldn't care about that sort of thing for a second.
"The Break-Up Breakdown" was a well-written episode, I thought. It was heartbreaking to watch, even though I knew that there had to be more to what was going on.

Oh, if you didn't like Non-Compete Clause, I don't know what to tell you about the second half of the season. Let's just say, get used to Ponies having spats. I don't recall quite thinking of The Break-Up Breakdown as up there with the great episodes of past seasons, but I'll take a decent episode and I think it still qualifies as a good one, which is something in season 8. I think episodes 21-23 are a return to form. All three are solid episodes, and I think at least two of those qualify as great, which makes me glad as I had pretty much written off this season. If you can make it through episodes 14-20, there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It's not that those episodes are void of entertainment value, and one or two may have a decent moral, if clumsily implemented, but you'll see a plethora of either out of character moments, spats at the drop of a hat, or morals that are actually harmful, or some combination of two or more of these problems. But, after that it seems as though a switch has been flipped, and things are back on track. Maybe I shouldn't jinx it, as there are still three more episodes to go, two of which make up the finale.

They're alright too, just like episodes 21-23. I don't know if I would go as far as to call the finale the best in the series, and it's not without its faults, but it's certainly engaging, as a FiM season finale should be. Yeah, it seems like the last leg of the season finally got things right. Mid-season is definitely a low point.

From what I've seen so far, it's been a bit of a misstep. I'm not as on-board with the friendship school idea as I initially was. Maybe that'll change when I eventually decide to finish out the season, but so far all I can think about is all of the stress that the Mane 6 must be putting themselves through by tackling a second job as a teacher.

If I have to compare season 8 to past seasons, things don’t look so good for it. Not only are there more...not so great episodes...than in past seasons, but I have a hard time getting behind the Student Six, as they’re just not as fleshed out as characters as the Mane Six, Spike, Starlight, the CMCs, etc. It’s not all bad, especially when you get to the last six episodes, but I just don’t think the current season is as good.

So...the Christmas special came out like last week. I think it's pretty good. It's still not in December, but I feel like these specials are creeping ever closer to it by two month increments, and October is only a couple months from December. I would say the next one would probably be around the right time. Too bad the series is supposed to end after season 9, but I guess we'll see. I'm determined not to like the replacement series unless it proves to be awesome.

I recently decided to start rewatching the whole series before Season 9 begins (in doing so, I'll finish the rest of Season 8). I just finished Season 1.

It has been a couple seasons since I have run through the entire show like that. The official designation of the latest Hearth's Warming special is S9E0.

Smile Song might have got in your head and made you forget there were more episodes after that in Season 2. Maybe? There are some great episodes after that one too, so I'm hoping you didn't forget them so much as the order they came in.

"A Canterlot Wedding" is still as perfect as it was the first time. I hope it goes down in history as one of the best animated television episodes ever conceived.

I'm in the middle of Season 3 right now, but I think I may be falling behind in my Kingdom Hearts marathon, so I may put that on pause for the sake of making up ground.

You might be interested in this: Haha wow, that was fantastic! The mirror made me lol. I'm in the middle of Season 3 right now, but I think I may be falling behind in my Kingdom Hearts marathon, so I may put that on pause for the sake of making up ground. Well, I'm halfway through Assassin's Creed III, and decided to put my marathon of that series on hold, since I'm kind of burnt out now that I'm technically six games in, so you're doing much better than I am. I'll probably take a bit of a break once that marathon is over before marathoning Kingdom Hearts as marathons take serious dedication. Speaking of which, for me recent Pony marathons tend to end before I get through the entire series at this point. Maybe it's because the series is longer now, maybe it's because I've done my share of marathons, but I've been finding them more difficult lately. Granted I haven't done one for a while and I just got the season 7 DVD, so maybe I'll give it another shot soon. On a related note, the season 7 DVD set is the first that doesn't come with a cardboard sleeve. It seems like the budget is cut just slightly with each release. I remember when the discs had character artwork on them, but the last few haven't had that, and now even that hunk of cardboard that makes the set look nice has been omitted. WTF? I'm noticing that with Equestria Girls releases too, mind you. The Legend of Everfree bluray is as bare bones as it gets, and Magical Movie Night is only available on DVD. I suppose in the latter case it's because the series switched to smaller shorts, but it's still noticeable. Come to think of it, I don't think Forgotten Friendship or Rollercoaster of Friendship have an official home release.
